It's the little things...

by K & R

The door that won't close correctly but takes a 1 minute fix after numerous complaints.  The bed that is so tilted because the cottage is crooked that loved ones go sleep in other rooms so they don't roll into each other all night.  The headboard could not be hung level because the tilt of the house made it look crooked even though it was perfectly level.  When we finally put a level on the bed we realized there was a 3 inch difference from one side of the bed to the other.  No wonder people were having trouble sleeping in there.   My dad took the wheels off one side of the bed frame.  Fixed.

Is this bed level?  Maybe...

A curtain for a door into the kids bunk room.  Now an awesome barn door in it's place.  Hooks by the door that kids can reach.  An outside towel rack for all those towels.  I swear they multiply!  But there are never enough. A spot for shoes by the door.  Ants....

Ants are the little thing that are the biggest nuisance.  We didn't notice them when we came to the cottage in winter.  Too cold.  Nor were they there in April.  I'm not sure we even saw any that first weekend we came up.  I'll have to ask my sister-in-law if they were an issue when she was here.  When we came on the last day of school we knew they were going to be a problem.  Black medium/large sized ants that are everywhere.  We bought borax after the woman at the hardware store suggested that was the best solution.  I killed a bunch that night until I remembered it was better to watch them sip borax and bring it back to their nest so that the rest of the ants died too.  I started playing a game of chicken with the ants.  Some times they took the bate and went right to the borax.  Other times they ran for the hills.  We even got some for the perimeter of the house.   It definitely worked.  The next day we started finding dead ants around the house.  Glad it's working but I'd rather they die outside! Unfortunately our three week renter didn't appear to vacuum much.  I had to vacuum just so I didn't get grossed out and so I didn't  have to listen to my middlest complaining.  I hated ants as a kid.  I get it. I'm not including any pictures.  They are gross.  Just gross!

I wasn't excited to wake up to the phone ringing first thing this morning.  I was however excited when it was the plumber saying he could come today to install the whole house water filter.  No more iron stains in the sinks, tubs, toilets, laundry, sheets.  Although in the meantime we did discover that Bar Keeper's Friend is an amazing combatant to iron stains!  We used iron out in our laundry before today. It worked for the brown iron stains but then it looks like we have tie dyed some sheets and towels. Oh well.  Nothing we could do about it.  Hopefully the water filter takes the taste and smell of iron out of the sink and shower water. The fridge filter makes a huge difference with the drinking water.

After we hung up with the plumber the phone rang ten minutes later.  It was terminex.  Great guy.  Lots of promises.  Told us he would come out four times in the next year.  Would deal with ants.  Possible mouse issue (never seen one but when house is vacant he seems to come out) and any other pests for the next year.  We could call if we notice ants come back and they'd come back within 24 hours to deal with problem with no extra fees.  Problem is we have a renter coming Saturday.  I asked him to come today because we have company coming tonight.  He said that shouldn't be a problem but if it was they would come tomorrow morning at the latest.  Great.  Sign me up.  Credit card number given.  Check another thing off the list.  Hang up.  Phone rings.  Another pest control place.  We are all set but thank you for calling us back (an issue here at the cottage).  Later we find that Terminex left a message that they can't come till Monday.  Thanks but no thanks!  Seriously? We have a renter here.  We can't give them a six hour window that they need to leave open for pest control to show up during and then ask our renters to stay out of the house for two hours.  We could ask that of our own company but not paying guests.  So frustrated.  Back to second caller.  Left message.  Hope he calls us back.  But not too early (Remember it's national tequila day!).  Hopefully they can come tomorrow or at the very latest Saturday morning.

Plumber arrived at 1:00 and worked until about 4:00 installing the whole house water filter.  It needs to have shut off valves on either side of the filter plus he added a third one so we could bypass the filter if we wanted/needed to.  Hopefully this thing will take care of the iron issues.  Glad I did not try to do this project on my own!

Before Filter
After Filter
Dock Maintenance - Kelsey called out to me around 3:00 saying that the ladder off the dock was broken.  Really?  Took a trip to Newport and Sunapee to find a replacement ladder but could not find one without special ordering it.

I decided to order one on Amazon and have it shipped to the house.  Not so easy up in Acworth - Our road is private so I cannot figure out how to get packages delivered to the house.  No worries right?  My brother also has a place on the lake so I decide to send it to his house - Amazon will definitely be able to find his house right?  Um - nope.  Package is now being redirected to our house in Massachusetts.

Next up...Whole house generators, spray foam insulation and electric hydronic baseboard heaters! Lets get ready for winter living in NH.
